EU nationals who were present in the United Kingdom prior to the 31st December 2020, had to have applied by the 30th June 2021, to ensure that their previous rights of residence were converted into either a pre settled or settled status under the Immigration Rules.

The family members of dual British Citizens / EU nationals may have a later corresponding deadline of the 29th March 2022, depending on certain circumstances.

Applications may be made late where the Secretary of State considers that there has been reasonable grounds for the delay.

Prior to 1988 EU Citizens would be given Leave to Remain under the Immigration Rules where applications had been made, and prior to 1971, the practice was to remove conditions from landing. Such a status was converted to settlement.
